What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that helps improve texture, tone, and overall skin quality by encouraging your body’s natural healing response. Using fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, microneedling stimulates the production of collagen and elastin—key building blocks for smoother, healthier-looking skin.

At Winter Park Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer microneedling to help address a range of skin concerns, and we’ll tailor your treatment to your unique needs, goals, and lifestyle. If deeper tightening or additional correction is needed, we may recommend Genius RF™ microneedling as part of your plan to help you restore healthy, youthful, radiant skin.

Who Is a Candidate for Microneedling?

You may be a good candidate for microneedling if you’re looking to improve:

  • Uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines or early wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars or mild scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Skin that looks dull or tired

During your consultation, we’ll talk through your concerns together and help determine whether traditional microneedling or Genius RF—or another skin care treatment altogether—is the best way to support your skin health.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling offers a range of benefits, such as:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Softening of fine lines and early wrinkles
  • Reduced appearance of acne scars and other mild scarring
  • Improved appearance of stretch marks
  • Better skin tone and overall clarity
  • Refined pores and healthier-looking skin
  • Gradual, natural-looking results with minimal downtime

By stimulating collagen and elastin production, microneedling helps strengthen the skin over time—making it a versatile option for patients who want noticeable improvement without aggressive treatment.

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling works by using tiny needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, which signal the body to repair and strengthen the treated area. As the skin heals, new collagen and elastin are produced, helping improve texture, firmness, and overall skin quality.

For those needing deeper correction, Genius RF™ delivers radiofrequency energy through the microneedles to promote greater collagen stimulation. Both approaches support the skin’s natural healing process, leading to gradual, natural-looking improvement over time. We’ll guide you toward the level of treatment that best matches your needs and comfort.

Microneedling Treatment Options

Microneedling and Genius RF™ microneedling treatment options allow us to tailor your treatment precisely to your skin and goals.

  • Microneedling: Traditional microneedling is often used to support smoother texture, improved tone, and overall skin health. It offers gradual, natural-looking improvement with minimal downtime and can be used on its own or alongside other treatments.
  • Genius RF™ Microneedling: Genius RF combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy for deeper collagen stimulation. It may be recommended when additional tightening is needed or when concerns such as acne scarring or skin laxity are present.

Microneedling may also be combined with treatments such as chemical peels, BBL® Photorejuvenation, or SkinTyte® when appropriate. We’ll help you understand how these treatments work together and what combination makes the most sense for you.

Recovery and Results

Downtime after microneedling is typically minimal, though it varies by treatment type.

After your treatment:

  • Traditional microneedling: No downtime. Mild redness usually resolves within 12–48 hours; makeup can typically be applied the next day.
  • Genius RF™ microneedling: Minimal to no downtime. Redness, mild swelling, and soreness may last a few days.

Visible improvements develop gradually as collagen rebuilds. Many patients notice smoother, brighter skin within a few weeks, with continued improvement over time. A series of treatments is often recommended for best results, and we’ll help you set expectations based on your skin and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between microneedling and Genius RF™ microneedling?

Traditional microneedling focuses on improving skin texture, tone, and overall quality by stimulating collagen near the surface of the skin. Genius RF™ microneedling builds on this approach by delivering radiofrequency energy through the microneedles, allowing for deeper collagen stimulation and additional skin tightening. During your consultation, we’ll help you understand which option—or combination—best supports your skin goals.

What areas can be treated with microneedling?

For microneedling, common treatment areas include the face, neck, chest, and hands—areas where collagen support and texture improvement are most vulnerable to aging and damage. For areas with more noticeable laxity or deeper structural concerns—such as the lower face or neck—Genius RF™ microneedling may be recommended to provide additional skin tightening. During your consultation, we’ll help you understand which areas may benefit most from each approach.

How many microneedling treatments will I need?

Most patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. The exact number depends on your skin concerns and whether traditional microneedling or Genius RF is used. We’ll recommend what’s most appropriate for your skin and goals.

Is microneedling painful?

Microneedling is usually painless. A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and most patients describe the sensation as manageable pressure or vibration.

When will I see results from microneedling?

Most results from microneedling develop gradually and naturally over time. Some patients also notice early improvements in texture and brightness, with continued enhancement as collagen rebuilds over the following weeks.

Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?

Yes. Microneedling is often combined with treatments like Genius RF microneedling, chemical peels, BBL® photorejuvenation, or skin tightening to address multiple concerns. We’ll help you decide which options make sense for your goals.
