Laser hair removal is performed over multiple sessions to eliminate all hair follicles, which at any given point are in differing stages of growth. The laser is passed over the treatment area and immediately destroys hair follicles in the active growth phase, which prevents the hair follicles from growing back. Treatment sessions are each spaced about 6 weeks apart to eliminate all the hair in the target area.
Some redness and slight swelling may occur in the treated area after laser hair removal; this should subside after a few hours. Ice may be applied to the treated area if desired. Skin care and sun care should be performed as instructed to protect this skin and reduce the risk of inflammation and sensitivity. Avoid shaving the treated area for 1 to 3 days. Do not wax.
Hair growth occurs in stages, and only the hairs currently in active growth stage can be affected by the laser. Even across the same square inch of skin, individual hair follicles may be in all different growth stages. This is why the same area of skin must be treated multiple times over the course of many weeks, so as to catch all hairs in their active growth stage.
