Any healthy adult with facial wrinkles may be a candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Candidates have moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and brows. These lines may be newly forming or permanently etched in over time. Most candidates are in their 30s, 40s, or 50s; individuals older than this may be better candidates for facelift surgery.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can smooth out and eliminate wrinkles in the upper face. Specifically, it may be used to correct horizontal forehead lines, wrinkles between the brows (brow furrows), wrinkles around the brows, and wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet).
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a nonsurgical treatment administered by injection. As an in-office treatment, it takes only 10 to 15 minutes to perform. Your surgeon will carefully inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into your desired treatment areas so that it can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines.
After receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments, patients can immediately resume their normal daily activities. Some patients may experience a temporary minor bruising, discomfort, or inflammation in the treated areas. The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic will become noticeable within 3 to 5 days after treatment.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to select small muscles in the face. This prevents the affected muscles from contracting strongly and causes them to relax. As a result, the overlying skin becomes smoother, and dynamic lines appear softer or fade from visibility. Treatment is highly targeted and can be used to address specific muscles without affecting natural muscle movement in untreated areas. After a few months, the product naturally dissipates, at which time additional treatments may be recommended to preserve results.
While quite similar, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® function in slightly different ways. Your treatment will be tailored to your goals and facial anatomy.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are performed in the office and typically take about 15 to 30 minutes. No anesthesia is generally required.

Many wrinkles in the upper face are caused by tiny muscle movements, which over time gradually etch lines into the skin. BOTOX® Cosmetic counteracts these effects by slowing or stopping small facial muscle contractions. For example, when injected between the eyebrows, BOTOX® Cosmetic minimizes the movement of the muscles that cause brow furrows, resulting in a wrinkle-free brow line even when you frown. Similarly, when injected at the outer corners of the eyes, BOTOX® Cosmetic gets rid of crow’s feet wrinkles that form due to smiling.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is not intended for use on wrinkles around the mouth and nose because these are caused by age-related tissue sagging and gravity, not muscle movements. Dermal fillers are the recommended treatment for lower face wrinkles.
When administered by a trained professional on the correct areas of the face, BOTOX® Cosmetic results will look natural and aesthetically pleasing.
BOTOX® Cosmetic results may last from 3 to 6 months. This treatment is best administered as part of a maintenance plan. With regular treatments approximately every 4 months, patients can enjoy a smooth, wrinkle-free appearance for many years.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are both derived from botulinum toxin type A and are both used to smooth facial wrinkles. Both are administered by injection and have similar lifespans. One difference is that BOTOX® Cosmetic is more concentrated (making it ideal for small, targeted areas) and Dysport® is more diffuse (making it ideal for larger areas). Another difference is the speed at which results become visible: Dysport® results may appear within 2 to 3 days, while BOTOX® Cosmetic results may take 3 to 7 days to appear. During your consultation, we’ll help you understand which of these treatments is a better fit for you.
Most treatments are performed in the office and take about 15 to 30 minutes. Because the process is quick and requires little recovery, many patients find it easy to fit into a normal day.
There is little to no downtime after treatment. Your skin may feel slightly tender or swollen at the injection sites for a short time, but most patients return to regular activities right away.

Yes. These treatments are sometimes combined with treatments such as fillers, HydraFacial MD, or laser skin resurfacing when additional support for skin quality or facial rejuvenation is desired. We’ll work with you to decide whether a combined approach makes sense for your goals.
