What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Advanced laser rejuvenation for texture, tone, and visible skin renewal.

Laser skin resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment that uses advanced laser technology to improve skin texture, tone, and quality by targeting damaged skin cells and stimulating collagen renewal. Treatments can help soften wrinkles, improve discoloration, refine acne scars, and reveal healthier, younger-looking skin.

At Winter Park Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer laser resurfacing treatments that can be customized to your skin type, concerns, and goals. Whether you’re looking for broader rejuvenation or more targeted correction of skin damage, we’ll help determine which laser treatment best fits your skin and goals to help you achieve smoother, more radiant-looking skin.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

You may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing if you want to improve:

During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your skin condition, treatment goals, and lifestyle needs to determine whether laser resurfacing or another treatment option is the safest and most effective choice for you.

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun-damaged or photoaged skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne scars or surgical scars
  • Textural irregularities
  • Enlarged pores
  • Other visible signs of skin damage or irregularity

Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing can improve skin quality in meaningful ways. Benefits may include:

By addressing damaged skin and stimulating collagen renewal, laser resurfacing supports both immediate visible improvements and lasting skin rejuvenation.

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Softer fine lines and wrinkles
  • More even skin tone and clarity
  • Improvement in scars and other irregularities
  • Stimulation of collagen for firmer, healthier-looking skin
  • Noticeable rejuvenation with customizable treatment depth
  • Results that continue to improve as the skin heals and renews itself

How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

Laser skin resurfacing works by delivering focused light energy into the skin to treat damaged tissue and stimulate cellular repair. Depending on the type of laser, resurfacing can target the skin’s surface, deeper skin layers, or both—helping reduce visible skin damage while encouraging the production of new collagen. As the skin recovers, texture becomes smoother, tone appears more even, and overall skin quality continues to improve over time.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment Options

We offer multiple resurfacing options so laser skin treatments can be tailored to your skin and your goals.

In some cases, laser resurfacing is paired with treatments such as Microneedling or SkinTyte to support more comprehensive rejuvenation. We’ll help you understand how these treatments work together and whether a combined approach makes sense for your skin and goals.

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing: Traditional laser resurfacing may be recommended for treating deeper wrinkles, significant sun damage, severe acne scarring, surgical scars, hypertrophic scars, actinic keratoses, or more advanced photoaging. Treatment depth can be customized based on the condition being addressed and the result you want to achieve.
  • HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser: HALO uses two wavelengths at the same time to treat both surface-level concerns and deeper skin issues. One wavelength targets the top layer of the skin while the other works within the deeper layers to stimulate collagen. HALO is often used for sun damage, visible skin aging, discoloration, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and scars. HALO is often chosen by patients who want meaningful skin rejuvenation with less downtime than more aggressive resurfacing treatments.
  • ProFractional® Laser Peel: ProFractional uses advanced microbeam technology to create thousands of microscopic treatment channels without damaging the surrounding healthy skin. This approach supports the body’s natural healing process while stimulating new collagen, making it a strong option for targeted concerns like wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, age spots, sun spots, freckles, and uneven texture. Because only a fraction of the skin is directly treated, healing is generally quicker than with more aggressive resurfacing methods.

Recovery and Results

Recovery depends on the resurfacing treatment performed and the depth of correction.

After your treatment:

Because the treated skin will be especially sensitive, sun protection is important after any resurfacing treatment. We will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to help protect your skin as it heals.

  • Traditional laser skin resurfacing: Many patients should plan for about one week away from normal activities, depending on treatment depth. Redness and swelling may last for several weeks, and residual pinkness may take up to a few months to fade completely.
  • HALO®: Most patients want to avoid social activities for a day or two, and makeup can usually be worn after 24 hours. Redness is common after treatment, and peeling often begins after about 24 hours. Visible improvement often begins after several days, with more dramatic results appearing after two to three weeks. Continued improvement occurs for several months.
  • ProFractional®: Mild redness similar to a sunburn is common. Many patients return to work and apply makeup within 1 to 2 days. Complete healing usually takes about 3 to 5 days. Results often continue developing over several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Dr. Poris explains who is a good patient for Moxi laser treatment.

How does laser skin resurfacing work?

Laser skin resurfacing reverses the effects of aging by destroying damaged, aging skin. Depending on the treatment technique, the laser may remove the surface skin from the treated area, or it may remove columns of damaged skin (such as acne scars). The body naturally replaces the old, damaged skin with a fresh, healthy layer of skin tissue. Treatment can be performed to various depths to address damage ranging from fine lines to deep creases.

What signs of aging can laser skin resurfacing correct?

Laser skin resurfacing can correct signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, age spots, other pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, and textural irregularities. It can also correct acne scars.

Can laser skin resurfacing be performed on all skin types?

With the Sciton JOULE™ platform, laser skin resurfacing can be safely performed on all skin types. Dr. Poris will determine the safest and best technique for your needs.

Which laser treatment should I get?

Dr. Poris offers a wide range of laser treatments that can be completely customized to meet your needs. Because every patient has unique skin, the appropriate laser technique for you will be personal to you. Dr. Poris will help you understand which laser treatment technique will best help you achieve your skin rejuvenation goals.

What results can I expect?

Laser skin resurfacing can yield dramatic results. This treatment has been proven to significantly improve and even eliminate many pigmented lesions, wrinkles, vascular lesions, and acne scars. You can expect your skin to appear noticeably smoother, younger, and healthier.

How long will the results last?

Results from laser skin resurfacing can be long-lasting. The best way to maintain your results is to adopt good skin care practices and wear daily sun protection. Regular laser resurfacing treatments every few years can also help you maintain your results long-term.

What’s the difference between laser skin resurfacing treatment options?

All laser skin resurfacing treatments improve skin tone, texture, and visible signs of aging, but each of the lasers works differently and has different applications. Traditional laser skin resurfacing is often used for more advanced skin damage and deeper correction. HALO® is a hybrid fractional laser that treats both the skin’s surface and deeper layers at the same time. ProFractional® uses microscopic treatment channels to stimulate collagen and support surface skin healing. During your consultation, we’ll help you understand which option best fits your goals.

How many laser resurfacing treatments will I need?

Laser skin resurfacing is highly customized, and the number of treatments needed will depend on the patient, the concerns being addressed, and the type of laser treatment that is performed. Some patients benefit from a single treatment while others may choose a series or maintenance plan. We’ll recommend an approach based on your skin condition, goals, and desired level of correction.

Is laser skin resurfacing painful?

Most patients tolerate laser skin resurfacing well. Topical numbing may be used for some treatments, and patients typically describe sensations such as warmth, heat, tingling, or mild pinching during treatment. We’ll talk with you about comfort measures and what to expect for your procedure.

When will I see results from laser skin resurfacing?

This varies by treatment. In many cases, patients notice initial improvements within days to weeks, while continued collagen remodeling leads to ongoing improvement over the weeks and months that follow. We’ll help set expectations based on the specific resurfacing option you choose.

Can laser skin resurfacing be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Laser resurfacing is sometimes combined with treatments such as SkinTyte® or Microneedling / Genius RF™ when additional tightening, collagen support, or texture refinement is needed. We’ll work with you to decide whether a combined approach makes sense for your skin.
