About Facial Fillers

Smooth and enhance facial contours with dermal fillers. Injectable facial fillers can volumize, lift, and restore wrinkled or thin/thinning skin. This quick, nonsurgical treatment can give you a more youthful, smooth, and revitalized appearance.

Candidates

Any healthy adult over 21 years of age with facial volume loss, sagging, and/or fine lines and wrinkles may be a candidate for facial fillers. Candidates typically have signs of facial volume loss, minor skin sagging, and/or fine lines and wrinkles in the cheeks, around the nose and mouth, the lips, and under the eyes. Candidates may also have thinner areas of the face that they wish to plump, such as naturally thin lips.

Treatment Areas

Facial fillers are used mainly to augment, enhance, smooth, and lift the contours of the mid- to lower face. Treatment areas include the lips, nasolabial folds, parentheses lines/smile lines, tear duct area, cheeks, and even the chin.

Techniques

Facial fillers are a nonsurgical treatment administered by injection. As an in-office treatment, it takes only 15 to 30 minutes to perform (depending on the treatment area and type of filler used). Dr. Poris uses JUVÉDERM® hyaluronic acid facial fillers for optimal results. She will carefully inject the dermal filler into the desired treatment area to smooth out wrinkles, enhance volume, lift, and/or improve your facial contours.

After the Procedure

After receiving facial fillers, patients can immediately resume their normal daily activities. Some patients may experience a temporary minor bruising, discoloration, itching, discomfort, swelling/tenderness, firmness, and/or lumps. These typically subside within a few days to a few weeks. The plumping effects of dermal fillers are instantly noticeable, but it may take up to 2 weeks for the results to fully settle.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Facial injectables that restore volume and soften facial aging.

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments used to restore lost facial volume, soften lines and folds, and enhance natural facial contours. Often used to rejuvenate the cheeks, lips, and around the nose and mouth, these treatments offer a quick and easy way to rejuvenate and refresh your look.

We personalize every treatment to match our patients’ needs, addressing visible facial aging and volume loss without surgery. We’ll help you understand which filler may be the better fit for your goals and how treatment can be tailored to support a refreshed look that still feels like you.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Juvéderm and Restylane fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body that helps support hydration and volume in the skin. Natural hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, causing the skin to become more susceptible to facial lines, folds, and visible volume loss. Injectable fillers replace or supplement that lost support, helping smooth lines and restore fullness in targeted areas. After a period of time, the product naturally dissipates, at which time additional treatments may be recommended to preserve results.

Treatment Options

At Winter Park Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer both Juvéderm and Restylane so treatment can be tailored to your facial anatomy, treatment area, and goals.

In some cases, dermal fillers may be paired with treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic / Dysport®, HydraFacial MD, or laser skin treatments as part of a broader rejuvenation plan. We’ll help you understand when combining treatments may better support your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Dr. Poris explains the typical age for patients to begin utilizing fillers and what to look for.

How do facial fillers work?

Facial fillers are used to volumize or enhance depressed areas of skin. With JUVÉDERM® fillers, this is done by injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like substance that is found naturally in the body. It acts like a cushion or lubricant, making it an ideal choice to fill in sunken or thin/thinning skin. When injected, the filler “fills” the area with hyaluronic acid gel, which increases volume in the skin and gives the outward appearance a filler, smoother look. For wrinkles and folds, this stops the creases from showing. For depressed or thin/thinning areas, this adds volume beneath the surface to provide lift and contour and to create more pleasing facial contours.

Do facial fillers work on all facial wrinkles?

Facial fillers are used to smooth out wrinkles or enhance volume in areas where the problem lies primarily within the skin’s structure. They are not recommended for areas where wrinkles are caused by muscle movements, such as crow’s feet or frown lines between the brows. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the recommended treatment for these types of wrinkles.

Do I have to be a certain age to get facial fillers?

Candidates for facial fillers are at least 21 years of age. Most candidates are in their 20s, 30s, 40s, or 50s; individuals older than this may be better candidates for facelift surgery.

Which type of filler do I need?

Dr. Poris will help you determine which facial filler will be best for you based on your unique needs. Here is a general recommendation: Cheek augmentation: JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC Chin profile enhancement: JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC Moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (parentheses lines, nasolabial folds): JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC, JUVÉDERM® XC, or JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC Lip augmentation: JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC or JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC Vertical lip lines (perioral lines/lipstick lines): JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC

How long do facial filler results last?

JUVÉDERM® is specially formulated to have long-lasting results. Depending on the injection site and the filler used, results can last up to 2 years. Treatment for the cheeks typically lasts closer to 2 years, whereas treatment of the lips, chin, or eye area may last closer to 1 year because these areas have more frequent movement and facial contractions. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, dermal fillers are best used as part of a maintenance plan. Regular treatments can maintain smooth, lifted, youthful facial contours for many years.

What’s the difference between Juvéderm and Restylane?

Juvéderm and Restylane are both hyaluronic acid-based filler families used to restore volume and soften facial lines. They work in similar ways, but they include different product formulations designed for different treatment areas and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, we’ll help you understand which type of filler may be a better fit for your needs.

How do I know which filler I need?

The right filler for you depends on the area being treated, the type of correction you want, and how much support or volume your skin needs. As examples, some fillers are better suited for the cheeks, others for the lips, and others for softening lines around the mouth. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your concerns, facial anatomy, and goals before recommending the filler that may work best for your needs.

How long does a dermal filler treatment take?

Most filler treatments take about 15 minutes to perform in the office. A topical numbing cream may be used beforehand to improve comfort.

Is there any downtime after dermal fillers?

There is little to no downtime after treatment, though mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising can occur. These effects typically improve over a few days. Most patients return to normal activities right away, though strenuous activity, sun exposure, and excessive heat should generally be avoided for at least 24 hours.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Juvéderm® and Restylane® are hyaluronic acid-based fillers that have been approved for medical use. When administered appropriately, these treatments are safe and widely used for restoring facial volume and softening lines and folds.

How long do results last?

Because hyaluronic acid fillers are gradually absorbed by the body over time, results may last from 6 to 24 months, depending on the treatment area and type of filler used. Results can be maintained with touch-up treatments as needed.

Can dermal fillers be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Dermal fillers are sometimes combined with treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic / Dysport®, HydraFacial MD, or laser skin procedures when additional support for wrinkles, skin texture, hydration, or overall rejuvenation is desired. We’ll help you understand when combining treatments may better support your goals.
