About Lip Augmentation

Smooth, lift, and shape your lips with lip augmentation. Various techniques can increase lip fullness, smooth vertical lip lines, refine lip shape, and provide youthful enhancement to lips that are thinning due to age. Surgical and non-surgical options are available to beautify the lips with stunning results.

Candidates

Healthy adults over the age of 21 who wish to enhance the fullness, shape, and/or smoothness of their lips may be candidates for lip augmentation. Some candidates have vertical lip lines (perioral lip lines) or other noticeable lip wrinkles. Other candidates have naturally thin or thinning lips caused by aging. Most candidates want to improve the appearance of their upper lip line, feminize their lips, soften facial features, and/or improve the aesthetic balance between their upper and lower lips.

Non-Surgical Lip Lift

Non-surgical lip augmentation offers a quick and easy treatment experience with excellent results. Fillers such as JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC can increase lip volume to both enhance thin lips and smooth out lip lines. Injectable fillers can provide beautiful results that are best kept up with regular maintenance treatments.

Surgical Lip Lift

A surgical lip lift requires anesthesia and involves very precise, careful technique. The procedure can create a lifted upper lip border (giving the illusion of a fuller upper lip) as well as more definition at the corners of the mouth. Depending on the technique used, this may leave a small scar at the base of the nose, along the upper lip line, or at the corners of the mouth. Scarring is usually minimal and well-hidden.

Fat Grafting to the Lips

Fat grafting to the lips requires anesthesia. Excess fat is taken from another area of the body using liposuction, and the fat cells are then processed and reinjected into the lips. In addition to lip volume enhancement with the patient’s own natural fat, this lip augmentation technique has the added benefit of reducing fat in the area of the body from which the fat cells were harvested.

What Is Lip Enhancement?

Fuller lips. Softer, balanced contours.

Lip enhancement is a non-surgical treatment that helps improve the fullness, shape, and balance of the lips. Treatment can be performed to either add volume and definition to the lips, provide a subtle “lip flip” to the upper lip, or both. Results are achieved using either an injectable dermal filler or BOTOX® Cosmetic.

At Winter Park Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we understand that lip enhancement should never feel one-size-fits-all. We’ll take the time to understand the changes you want to make and help you choose an approach that complements your facial features while preserving a soft, natural appearance.

Who Is a Candidate for Lip Enhancement?

You may be a good candidate for lip enhancement if you want to improve:

During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your lips, facial proportions, and goals to determine which enhancement option is most appropriate for you.

  • Naturally thin or small lips
  • Lip volume that has diminished with age
  • Uneven or asymmetrical lips
  • Poorly defined lip borders
  • The balance between the upper and lower lips
  • Overall lip shape and projection

Benefits of Lip Enhancement

Benefits of lip enhancement may include:

By carefully tailoring the placement and amount of product used, lip enhancement can create noticeable improvement without making the lips look overfilled or out of balance.

  • Fuller, more defined lips
  • Improved lip shape and symmetry
  • Better balance between the lips and surrounding features
  • Personalized treatment based on your desired level of enhancement
  • Quick, in-office treatment
  • Little to no downtime
  • Natural-looking results that can be maintained over time

How Lip Enhancement Works

Lip enhancement uses carefully placed injectable treatments to improve the shape, fullness, definition, or balance of the lips. Depending on your goals, treatment may add volume, subtly reveal more of the upper lip, or combine both approaches for a customized result. We’ll evaluate your natural lip anatomy and help you choose the treatment that best supports the look you want while maintaining soft, balanced proportions.

Treatment Options

  • Lip Fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane® are injected into carefully selected areas to add volume, improve symmetry, define the lip border, or refine lip shape. Results are immediately visible and typically last about 6 months to 1 year.
  • Juvéderm Volbella®: Often used for subtle lip volume.
  • Juvéderm Ultra®: Used to add more noticeable fullness and definition to the lips.
  • Restylane Silk®: Designed for subtle lip enhancement.
  • Other Restylane® Fillers: May be selected based on the amount of volume, structure, or flexibility needed.
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic Lip Flip: A lip flip uses small, strategic injections around the upper lip to relax selected muscles. This allows the lip to turn slightly outward so more of the natural lip becomes visible, giving the appearance of more fullness without adding volume. Results generally appear within several days and last about 3 months.
  • Combination Treatment: Some patients benefit from combining a small amount of filler with a lip flip. A filler can improve volume, shape, and definition, while the lip flip can reveal more of the upper lip. We’ll help you determine whether one treatment or a carefully balanced combination makes the most sense for you.

Recovery and Results

Lip enhancement treatments typically have no downtime.

After your treatment:

Dermal filler results are visible immediately, and the final appearance becomes clearer as mild swelling subsides. Results from lip fillers generally last about 6 months to 1 year. A BOTOX® Cosmetic lip flip typically becomes visible within 2 to 4 days and lasts approximately 3 months.

  • Mild swelling, tenderness, or bruising may occur
  • Swelling generally begins to improve within about 48 hours
  • Ice may be recommended during the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Most patients return to normal activities right away
  • No downtime is usually required

Frequently Asked Questions

How popular is lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation has long been popular among older individuals (especially women ages 50 and above) due to age-related lip thinning and vertical lip lines. Modern techniques have greatly increased the popularity and accessibility of the procedure, and many patients in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are getting lip lifts to improve their lip fullness and shape.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Lip augmentation with fillers has a very minimal recovery, and patients can usually go about their daily activities without interruption. For fat grafting, there may be a few days of downtime for recovery. For surgical lip lifts, specific postoperative instructions are given to ensure a healthy, smooth recovery. These include resting at home for 24 hours, avoiding straws, avoiding hot or salty foods for several days, keeping your lips relaxed and moisturized, ingesting soft foods for at least 48 hours, and cleaning the incisions as they heal. You will also need to avoid sleeping on your face and refrain from exercising for 7 to 14 days.

Will I have noticeable scarring?

Lip lifts performed using fillers or fat grafting will not cause scarring on or around the lips. Surgical lip lifts may leave a small scar at the base of the nose, along the upper lip line, or at the corners of the mouth. Scarring is usually minimal and well-hidden, and every care is taken to ensure that the incisions are smooth and even so that the skin heals well.

How long will it take to see the results?

It can take a few weeks to see lip augmentation results, as the body needs time to reduce any minor swelling and allow the soft lip tissues to adjust. As your lip settles, you will see further improvements. Improved lip definition and lip ratio can be observed after just 6 to 12 weeks, and results can continue to improve for up to one year due to softening of the lips and tissues over time.

How long do the results last?

The longevity of lip lift results depends on the techniques used. Fillers require regular treatments to maintain ideal results due to frequent lip movement. Surgical lip lift results are long-lasting and can provide great satisfaction.

What is the difference between a lip filler and a lip flip?

A lip filler physically adds volume and can be used to improve fullness, definition, symmetry, and shape of the lips. A BOTOX® Cosmetic lip flip does not add volume; it relaxes selected muscles so the upper lip turns slightly outward and appears more visible. We’ll help you understand which option better matches the result you want.

How do I know which lip enhancement treatment I need?

The right treatment depends on your natural lip anatomy and whether your main goal is to add volume, improve definition, correct asymmetry, or reveal more of the upper lip. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your features and recommend a treatment that supports a natural, balanced result.

Will my lips look overfilled?

Lip enhancement can be as subtle or noticeable as you prefer. Careful product selection, conservative placement, and attention to your natural proportions help create results that complement your face rather than overpower it.

How long does lip enhancement last?

The effects of lip fillers typically last about 6 months to 1 year while the effects of a BOTOX® Cosmetic lip flip usually last about 3 months. Regular treatments can be performed to maintain results long term.

What is lip enhancement treatment like?

Lip enhancement treatments are performed in the office and usually take only a few minutes. A topical numbing cream may be applied before treatment, and several injections are carefully placed using a small needle. Afterward, patients usually resume their daily routine.

Is lip enhancement painful?

Most patients tolerate treatment well. A topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand, and many lip fillers also contain lidocaine to improve comfort. You may feel brief pressure or pinching during the injections.

Is there any downtime after lip enhancement?

There is generally no downtime, although temporary swelling, tenderness, and bruising are common. These effects usually begin to improve within a few days, and most patients can return to their usual routine immediately.

Can lip enhancement be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Lip enhancement may be combined with dermal fillers in other areas or BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® treatments when broader facial rejuvenation is desired. We’ll help you decide whether combining treatments makes sense for your features and goals.
