Any healthy, adult woman who is not currently pregnant may be a candidate for mastopexy. Candidates hope to improve the shape, symmetry, position, and/or appearance of their breasts. Ideal candidates are at a manageable, healthy body weight and would label their breasts as appearing “saggy” or “deflated”.
Breast lift surgery involves the surgical removal of excess, loose breast skin followed by tightening, reshaping, and repositioning the breasts so that they appear more youthful. Depending on your needs, your breast lift may be combined with either breast augmentation techniques (to simultaneously lift the breasts and enhance breast fullness) or breast reduction techniques (to simultaneously lift the breasts and reduce breast size).
You should be in good health prior to undergoing this surgery. If you are receiving treatment for any chronic health conditions, you will need to request clearance from your primary care physician. You may also need to get a mammogram, EKG, and basic blood work to evaluate your health in anticipation of a successful procedure and healthy recovery. You will also need to plan for adequate time off work and arrange for assistance during your recovery, especially for activities such as driving, household responsibilities, and childcare.
Most patients can expect approximately 7 days of downtime after mastopexy. If breast lift surgery is combined with augmentation or reduction techniques, the recovery timeline may be longer. Weightlifting and strenuous exercises should be avoided for a minimum of 4 weeks. To accommodate these restrictions, you may need to limit your work responsibilities and seek assistance for basic household responsibilities and childcare. Underwire bras should not be worn for at least 4 weeks after the procedure
Breast lift scars will typically appear in one of the following locations: \- encircling the areola \- encircling the areola and extending vertically downward to the breast crease (lollipop scar) \- encircling the areola, extending vertically downward to the breast crease, and extending horizontally along the breast crease (anchor scar) The incision location will depend on the shape and size of your breasts, how much positional correction is necessary, and whether you will also be receiving a breast augmentation or breast reduction. The scar’s appearance and length will depend on these factors as well as your body’s natural healing process. Most breast lift scars fade significantly over time.

Mastopexy results are expected to last a long time, especially if you maintain a healthy body weight after surgery. Even so, some sagginess can occur over time due to natural aging and diminishing skin quality. Future weight fluctuations or pregnancies can also affect breast size, shape, and position. To maintain the best results, it is usually recommended that individuals choose to undergo mastopexy when they have finished having children and are able to maintain a healthy and stable body weight.
